Welcome to the February Update

Explore sewing your own lingerie, by Haley Glenn.

January 31, 2018

Hello Seamworkers,

I have always been an avid learner. Once I discover an area of interest, I am hungry to study everything there is to learn on the subject. It was no wonder that when I discovered sewing, and the amazing people who make up the sewing community, it felt like I had truly found my tribe.

As I grew as a seamstress, I would fearlessly tackle challenging project after challenging project, not batting an eyelash as to what may or may not be outside my skillset. Sewing a tailored jacket? No problem! Make shoes? Sure! But the one thing that stopped me dead in my tracks was lingerie.

When I thought of lingerie, the first thing that popped into my mind was bras. Something about the daunting list of specific notions and materials, and the sheer engineering required to support the bust made me avoid this niche in the sewing world. Somehow it didn’t occur to me that if just sewing a bra intimidated me, then there was no reason that bras had to be the ground floor of my lingerie sewing journey.

One day while sorting through my knit fabric scraps, I decided to put my scraps to good use and create some panties, using my favorite pair as a template. Once I realized how easy it was, I quickly graduated from panties to a bralette, to a full-on underwire bra!

This month, we are introducing two lingerie sets perfect for you to start sewing lingerie or add to your existing me-made collection of underthings. Meet the Kaye and Dana sets. Both sets can be worn as underwear or for lounging and can be mixed and matched with one another to create a completely custom look.

Kaye is a sporty soft bra and shorts set that is as versatile as it is comfortable. The Kaye soft bra features wide straps and a scooped front and back neckline. Elastic adds light support to this bra. The Kaye shorts feature a fitted cut, mid rise, and an above mid-thigh length. Wear this laid-back duo as loungewear, undergarments, or even as an edgy layering set.

Dana is a bralette and panties set with a sleek modern design. The Dana bralette features a bandeau-style cut with center front gathers and straps for support. The Dana panties have a comfortable mid-rise design with a subtle cheeky cut. Sew the Dana set in a printed jersey as a fun secret layer to your everyday wardrobe, or sew a chic set in black or nude for a versatile staple.

In addition to these new patterns, the February issue of Seamwork explores techniques, ideas, and resources to help renew your creativity in the coming month. This month, we take you inside a tailoring and design studio. We also are sharing three lingerie elastic techniques. And Sarai talks about a method for continually feeding and cultivating your creativity.

Make sure to check out the Patterns in this Issue feature to see all the ways you can customize Kaye and Dana to fit your wardrobe needs.

As always, I look forward to seeing your inspired makes.

Happy sewing,
