Only stretch elastic enough for the fabric to lay flat. Overstretching elastic can diminish the recovery of elastic.
Stitch Selector Most modern sewing machines come with a variety of stitches. The stitch selector allows you to switch between stitch styles.
You would need to use elastic stabilizer in the seam to allow it to stretch, or the threads holding the gathers will break when stretched.
