Welcome to the Summer Issue

What you’ll see this season from Seamwork, by Haley Glenn.

Hello Seamworkers,

Welcome to the summer issue of Seamwork. This month, I want to take you behind the scenes of our process a bit and share how we create two new wardrobe-building patterns every month. In the future, I hope to use this space from time to time to give you all a look at what inspired our designs.

This season, we focused on effortless warm-weather staples. We set out to create garments that you’ll reach for when the weather becomes hot and balmy. It was also essential to us that these garments travel well since summer is prime time for vacations and weekend getaways. But we didn’t want to neglect your work wardrobe, so at the end of the season, you’ll also see some great office-appropriate pieces.

To kick off the summer season, we created two patterns that are perfect when combined into a set. Sets can give the illusion of a jumpsuit or playsuit with the bonus of more versatility since the pieces can be mixed and matched with others in your closet.

Meet the Kristin top and Heidi shorts. This pair can be worn so many different ways, from dressed down in chambray to glammed up with an exotic print.

The Kristin top offers the wardrobe-building simplicity of a classic woven tank, with a twist. This wrap-style tank features a clever three-armhole design, making it a far cry from basic. Bust darts, a relaxed fit, and a slightly cropped length make for a flattering fit for both misses and curvy sizes. Try pairing this top with high-waisted bottoms like the Heidi shorts or layer this piece over your favorite sleeveless dress.

The Heidi shorts offer versatile style and a fit that even shorts skeptics are sure to love. Heidi’s high-waisted design, pleats, and a relaxed fit make these shorts look great in a range of fabrics, from drapey rayon to lightweight denim. A simple side seam invisible zipper keeps these shorts looking clean and polished.

In addition to these new patterns, the summer issue of Seamwork explores techniques, ideas, and resources to help renew your creativity in the coming month. This month, we talk about the power of sewing with Heather Lewenza of Closet Case Patterns and take you behind the scenes with Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics. Artist Alyson Provax explores three different natural dyeing techniques. And Sarai talks about how building up the component skills can help you master any creative practice.

Make sure to check out the Patterns in this Issue feature to see all the ways you can customize the Kristin top and Heidi shorts to fit your wardrobe needs. In each issue, we explore pattern hacks, fabrics, and tutorials that help you create clothing you’ll love wearing.

As always, I look forward to seeing your inspired makes.

Happy sewing,
