Get Inspired by Menswear Fabrics

Add classic style and texture into your wardrobe with these suiting staples, by Haley Glenn.

August 31, 2018

Trends come and go, and chances are if you sew, you subscribe to your own unique sense of style. But whether you love them or hate them, trends influence everything, including the fabrics you'll find at your local fabric store or the patterns releases that pepper your Instagram feed.

What I love is style inspiration that can be reimagined, polished, and tweaked to fit YOUR unique sense of fashion. One fall trend that lends itself to this exact kind of play is menswear-inspired textiles.

Menswear inspiration often finds its way into womenswear, but this textile trend lends itself to so many styles and iterations. Best of all, this look is classic and sure to remain timeless for seasons to come.

Glen Check + Callahan Pants

The Callahan pants sewn in Glen check

Glen check (also commonly referred to as Glen plaid) originates from the Glenurquhart valley—which also happens to be its namesake. Its two-tone alternating pattern characterizes Glen check, and though it is commonly comprised of wool, you can also find linen and shirting alternatives.

The modernity of the Callahan pants paired with this polished fabric creates a boyish look that pairs well with anything from a pink cashmere sweater to a crisp button-up.

Houndstooth + Lilliana

Try sewing Lilliana in houndstooth.

Don't be afraid to play with proportion! This jumbo-sized tweed houndstooth is perfect for jackets like Lilliana. Try adding a pop of color by trimming this jacket with a contrast bias binding.

Herringbone + Christina

Try sewing Christina in herringbone.

A timeless pencil skirt sewn in herringbone will get a whole lot of wear for years to come. Herringbone is widely available in a range of fun colors, so get creative with unexpected colors like lilac or red.
