How to Sew an Inserted Pocket

I think all sewers can agree — there's nothing more exciting than adding pockets to your garments. Today I'll be showing you how to sew inserted side seam pockets, which is our preferred method for pants patterns here at Seamwork. Here is an example of inserted side seam pockets on our Marett pattern. As you can see, it's in the side seam and attaches at the waistband. Now let's get started!

First, we'll finish the curved edges of each pocket piece with a zigzag stitch or a serged edge. Place a pocket piece to the front of the pants, with right sides together. Stitch down the entire length of the pocket at 1/2". Now we'll finish the entire side seam raw edge with a zigzag stitch or serged edge. Then, press the pocket away from the front of the pants. Repeat these steps for the remaining pocket pieces and the other front and the back pieces. On the front of the pants, understitch along the front pockets, catching the seam allowance underneath. With right sides together, align the front and the back at one side seam, with the pockets facing out from each other—and pin. Stitch around the pocket and pivot your needle at the side seam and sew down to the hem. Stitch from the waistline down to the first circle, and then stitch from the second circle down to meet the stitches below. Press the pocket and all of the seam allowances towards the front. Alternatively, you can snip into the seam
allowance under the pocket to press open. Finally, baste the top of the pocket to the waistline.
