Dive into an exciting, hands-on class that gives you all the information you need to get started with your serger. This class will empower you to thread, operate, and troubleshoot your machine, and you’ll learn tricks for working with different fabrics and stitches. Plus, you'll leave the course with a stylish new T-shirt you created yourself.
By the end of this course you’ll be able to:
- Confidently thread your machine without any stress
- Recognize what a perfect stitch looks like
- Troubleshoot your less-than-perfect stitches
- Set up your machine for 4-thread overlock, 3-thread overlock, 3-thread rolled hem, and 3-thread flatlock stitches
- Sew curves and corners, and work with all sorts of fabrics
- Wear a brand new T-shirt you made entirely on your serger!

Meet Your Teacher
Erica is the Community Manager at Seamwork. She’s been sewing since she was 10 and worked and taught for 12 years at a fabric store. She loves the endless possibilities sewing your own clothes offers, from experimenting with different fabrics and techniques to challenging yourself to try things you haven’t done before.
Course Modules
Module 1: Get to Know Your Serger
In this module, you'll familiarize yourself with your serger. You'll learn the essential serger anatomy and gather the supplies you need for your first serger projects.
Module 2: How to Thread and Set Up Your Serger
In this module, you'll learn how to thread and set up your serger, including a trick for re-threading quickly without stress. You'll also explore what the perfect serger stitch looks like, and how to adjust your tension settings to get it.
Module 3: How to Set Up Different Stitches
This is the description for M3.
Module 4: How to Sew With Your Serger
In this module, you'll learn how to sew with your serger, including how to secure serger tails, rip out mistakes, and tricks for seaming with different fabrics. In the last lesson, you'll serge the Ryan T-shirt step by step!
Module 5: How to Get the Best Stitches
In the last module, you'll learn a bunch of troubleshooting skills that you can apply if your stitch is not perfect. You'll also learn some machine care and get ideas for your future serger projects!

- This class is very hands-on, so you will get the most out of it if you currently own a serger. However, if you plan to purchase a serger soon, you can watch the class to see a few different machines in action. If you’re a member, you can also visit the Community forum to get opinions on which machine is best for you.
- Do I need to have prior experience using a serger to take this class?
- Nope! This class teaches serger fundamentals, so you don’t need experience. Although some experience with a sewing machine and constructing garments is helpful, you don’t need any experience with a serger to take this class.
- Are patterns included in this class?
- Yes, the Ryan T-shirt pattern is included in the class along with a step-by-step sewalong.
- Can I get access to the private forum to post my fitting questions if I am not a member?
- Our Community is private, so you need a membership to be able to post questions and read the forum. The Community is a safe, encourage space, and we want Seamworkers to feel comfortable knowing who they are chatting with!
