We wanted to create a pants pattern that’s both structured and flexible, with clean lines and elegant shaping. It’s a wardrobe builder that gives you the opportunity to practice precision sewing and stretch your skills while creating a polished piece you’ll want to wear again and again.
The Lars Pants are sleek, tailored pencil pants designed for stretch wovens, offering a polished look with all-day comfort. Fitted throughout, Lars features single front and double back waist darts for subtle shaping and a flattering silhouette. An invisible side seam zipper maintains a clean finish, while back, single welt pockets with button closure add a classic touch. The waist is finished with a facing for a smooth, structured fit, and a side slit at the hem adds ease and visual interest. Lars is a versatile wardrobe essential perfect for dressing up or down.
The Lars Member Bonus offers a fresh take on the original design with a cropped wide leg silhouette. Still made for stretch wovens, this version combines tailored details—like waist darts, a facing finish, and a sleek invisible zipper—with a more relaxed, modern fit. The wide leg shape adds comfort and movement, while maintaining the polished look of the original. Perfect for transitional seasons and easy layering, this variation is a stylish, skill-building addition to your handmade wardrobe.
Eden is wearing the Lars pants in a size 0, graded to a 4 at the hip and throughout the leg. We increased the rise depth 1 1/2". Her measurements are waist: 25 1/4" (64.1 cm), hip: 37" (94 cm), thigh: 21 1/4" (54 cm), and she is 5'8" (172.7 cm) tall.
Franki is wearing the Lars pants in a size 20. We increased the rise depth 1/2" and reduced the inseam length 1 1/2". Her measurements are waist: 41" (104.1 cm), hip: 52 1/2" (133.4 cm), thigh: 31" (78 cm), and she is 5'6 1/2" (169 cm) tall.
Fabric and Fit
Fabric recommendations: For best results, choose medium to heavy weight stretch woven fabrics with at least 25% stretch. Stretch percentage is key as too little stretch can make the pants too tight.
Great options include stretch twill, stretch denim, stretch corduroy, and stretch suitings. These fabrics provide enough structure to showcase the tailored fit of Lars, while still allowing for comfortable movement.
Stretch denim or twill are perfect for everyday, and offer a casual look. Stretch corduroy is perfect for adding texture and would pair perfectly with sweaters as we move into the fall season. And suitings make Lars look polished and classic.
