Welcome to the Spring Issue

Celebrate spring with two new patterns, by Haley Glenn.

February 28, 2018

Hello Seamworkers,

For many of us, March marks the beginning of spring. And let’s be real, spring and summer are hands down the best seasons to sew for. Floaty dresses and killer jumpsuits in linen and breezy cottons—I want to run to my sewing room and lock the door just thinking about it.

But unfortunately, spring is fickle and fleeting, and while in the Northern Hemisphere warmer days are fast approaching, cooler days are on the horizon. What we need are solid transitional pieces that can satiate that need to sew for spring while still being totally practical.

This month, we are introducing two patterns perfect for refreshing your wardrobe in preparation for spring. Meet the Audrey jacket and Kimmy dress. Both patterns are eye-catching on their own, but they also layer beautifully, so you can indulge in spring style even when a chill still hangs in the air.

The denim jacket is an indispensable wardrobe basic. The Audrey jacket is a classic design that offers all the bells and whistles of a traditional denim jacket. Make this piece in dark wash denim for a look that will stand the test of time, or try creating a crisp white jacket perfect for spring.

Kimmy is a versatile dress that marries effortless style with ease and comfort. Dolman sleeves with adjustable gathers and an elastic waistline offer this frock its figure-flattering shape. Make this dress in crisp chambray for a daytime look, or try a solid rayon challis for a polished evening look.

In addition to these new patterns, the spring issue of Seamwork explores techniques, ideas, and resources to help renew your creativity in the coming month. This month, we take you inside a modern haberdashery, discussing how to balance different creative outlets and avoid burnout. We also teach you how to create graphic custom patches, perfect for personalizing the Audrey jacket. And Sarai talks about finding the optimal state in sewing, asking the question: Can everyday acts of creativity be the true key to a happy life?

Make sure to check out the Patterns in this Issue feature to see all the ways you can customize the Audrey jacket and Kimmy dress to fit your wardrobe needs. In each issue, we explore pattern hacks, fabrics, and tutorials that help you create clothing you’ll love wearing.

As always, I look forward to seeing your inspired makes.

Happy sewing,
