I Sewed a '90s Laura Ashley Dress

Is this pattern technically vintage?

Posted in: Fabric & Textiles • June 5, 2023

When exactly does a pattern start to qualify as “vintage”?

I’m not sure, really. Technically, I think the pattern I made in today’s video may not officially be vintage, but it’s hard to hear the name Laura Ashley and not think romance, floral chintz, English countryside, and that word - vintage.

And since, as you may recall if you’ve been following along with my spring sewing plans, my keyword this season is “90s romance”, this Laura Ashley pattern definitely fit the bill.

I don’t know if I would have chosen it if I hadn’t gone through the Design Your Wardrobe process, but I’m SO glad I did because this is now one of my favorite things I’ve made this year.

As I made this dress, I wanted to give you some tips for working with slippery, lightweight fabric like the rayon used here.

From deciding whether to add a lining or not, to making the cutting process easier and more precise, I share some of my favorite tricks for working with light fabric – including my favorite tip for preventing wavy zippers.

Enjoy it, and let me know what you think!
