About the Fabric Focused Maker

You have a strong desire to make things that are wearable and that express who you are. You are fascinated by fabric and the ways it can be used to create all different types of clothing. At the same time, fabric can be a point of confusion or frustration for you. How do you choose the right fabric? Where do you source it? You’re motivated to build your fabric vocabulary and make better choices.

Your Goals

1

Build your confidence in choosing fabric.

2

Understand the properties of different kinds of fabric.

3

Be able to visualize a finished project in various types of fabric.

Your Biggest Challenge

The Fabric Gap

In talking to thousands of members in our community, we’ve found that Fabric Focused Makers like you have a pretty common problem, which we’ll call The Fabric Gap.

Choosing the right fabric can often feel like guesswork. You may be limited in the types of fabrics you can find locally, but shopping online is difficult as well – how do you know what the fabric will look, feel, and wear like?

You are curious and want to learn, but you want to do it without the expense (in time and money) of multiple failures.

You Might:

  • Feel confused about what fabric recommendations on a pattern really mean.
  • Want to build up your vocabulary around fabric.
  • Feel unsure about what to look for in a fabric.
  • Have difficulty visualizing a garment from fabric to completion.

Where to Start

To address the Fabric Gap, the next best thing to years of experimentation with fabric is learning about the fabric choices of others. By seeing a garment from initial fabric to completion, and learning why that fabric was chosen, you can begin to understand the properties you should look for to get a particular look (and why).

Here’s how to get started on that path:

Seamwork Fabric Series

To learn about our own fabric choices, check out the (free) videos we put out every month on fabric. They’re all available on our YouTube channel. Haley, our designer, walks you through the fabrics we chose for our new patterns each month, and you’ll get to see what they look like, how they drape, and learn why they were chosen.
